I know it's only rock n' roll

But I like it!

I managed to grab a treasury and filled it with some cool rock n' roll stuff. Check it out!

Gypsy Road

Well, what a day this has been. First things first, those digital sketches a couple posts back were supposed to be crit'd today, but the teacher decided on ANOTHER week to work on them. In part because most of the work brought in showed minimal effort. So I had nothing to do alllll day except do another sketch for it.

Tom Keifer of Cinderella. Technically this painting is already well underway, but shhhh. I dunno why I always picture Tom so sad/serious. Suppose it's because I don't think I have a single picture where he's smiling, and 'cause he can't help but pout with those lips. But I should do a painting for that reason I suppose. He has a really cute smile.

The background is more or less a placeholder. I think there will be a wall/corner there, but I dunno what else. Maybe I'll watch some Cinder vids for inspiration.

Cinderella break!

I have major love for John Currin at the moment. Not so much his subject matter, though I do find it funny, and I couldn't care less whether he hates women or not. But his technique in the smoother paintings is gorgeous.

Click here for awesome art, definitely not work safe.

Smells like cancer

I've been breathing paint thinner fumes so much this past week, I think I can feel the tumor growing with each breath.

It's not nearly as strong as turps, buuuuut I'm sure it's not healthy. Everything fun is bad for you.

Photos of the underpaintings for Donnie, Phil, and Tom will be up in the next day or two. Maybe Billy, if I'm not too lazy in studio tomorrow.

Enuff Z'Nuff break

Great old video of them on Letterman. They clean up pretty good even without the lip gloss. I'm probably destined to be the EZN of the art world, slipping through the cracks, wrong place wrong time. But I'm ok with that. There are worse people to be than EZN. I could be Creed.

cock rock; shock pop

Wow I stink at blogging. I'll blame school.

So despite slightly slower additions to my etsy shop, I've been getting more done than ever in my fine art practice. And some really cute tiny oil paintings that just need to dry before I list them.

Here's a sneak peak into some upcoming projects. I've lovingly nicknamed pretty much my entire studio practice "cock rock; shock pop" from the PBF song Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz. It just fits.

The delightful Marc Bolan. Oil on panel, 8x10". It's got a really nice charm in person as a cozy miniature painting. A little view into a boozy glam world. This was the catalyst for most of the work I've been doing in the last couple months. Music and glam are my things. A big trend recently has been artists that document urban culture, and there's always been artists dealing with immigration and their native cultures, and so on. Well glam rock is my little project. This painting doesn't so much idolize Marc as it does give a window into this warm, glamorous setting. But before I launch into an entire thesis, I'll leave it at that. Bottom line, Marc was a foxy man. And there should be many many paintings of him for the good of mankind.

(other side of the hammer pillow)

Michael Alig pillows. The prompt was 3D drawing, either by building off the wall or removing the drawing from the wall entirely. My If It Bleeds... series prompted a lot of talk about promoting serial killers as celebrities or pop idols and whether that bothered me. It doesn't. I have a giant Ed Gein painting on my wall and more movies about psychos than I should admit, buuuut artsy people love to talk about that shit. So in response to those people, I went a step further and created the Homicide Home Collection. If Martha Stewart just isn't your style, you can pick up a lovely series of pillows depicting Michael Alig and his unfortunate little homicide incident. After all, people love killers in their movies, tv, books, why not have them around all the time and use them for decoration? Makes sense to me.

And a couple projects in the works:

Pardon all the random junk on my table. The project is "Clowning: The Mask". Club kids obviously operated within the idea of the mask. Being a portrait painter, the comparisons to renn. and dutch painters never end. But in this case, hey, why not. So I thought of old timey portraits where a society lady would put on her best dress and a nice hat and pose for the portrait that more or less defined her identity and status. And if Richie Rich, at this time, were to dress in his definitive look to sit for a portrait, I figure this would be pretty close. And that makes me laugh. James has been done since this picture was taken too. Now they just need to hurry up and dry so they can get some glamorous color.

Oh Phil, so pretty it should be a crime. Getting back to my glam rambling, these are sketches for future paintings. In general I don't draw this much or even color my sketches, but they're for another class project ("drawing as plan for a future work") and should look nicer than my usual scribbles. In essence even the paintings will be studies for future work this summer or fall, more along the lines of the Marc piece above with a background and whatnot. But these will be technical pieces about the surface and physical properties of the paint, color, and getting the spirit of the subject. Phil was the singer for Girl and LA Guns, by the way. Youtube it.

Dj Ashba. Beautiful Creatures, Sixx AM, etc. And all around pretty boy.

Donnie Vie. Singer for Enuff Z'Nuff. Again, youtube 'em. Then get the albums 'cause a life without EZN just isn't worth living. In terms of getting the subject's personality this is probably least representative. He's a cynical bastard, but I think it gets the spirit of EZN (they really couldn't possibly use more peace signs in their imagery). Whatever, I think it's a cute drawing of Donnie, so fuck it. He has his cheery moments.

Aaaaand last but not least, poor John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) is stuck with these glam boys. He'll manage. At this point this painting will probably never happen, but I like the drawing anyway.

Tom Keifer, Brent Muscat, and Billy Idol are also in the early stages.

Aaaaaand, that's about all there is to update on. 3am, probably time to sleep.
