Hard To Be Vain

New painting of Nicki Kin [guitarist for Vains of Jenna]. It was a birthday gift for him. :)

It's 6x6", oil on steel.

The background is a steel plate that was heated to have iridescent tones of blue, pink, and orange. The colors are actual permanent changes in the metal. I love how it sparkles and glows when the light hits it at just the right angle.

Lots more metal paintings coming up!

You can find pictures past metal stuff here and here

Heavy Metal Picks

Heavy Metal Picks are hand crafted metal guitar pick necklaces. Each one starts out as plain copper or steel sheet, is formed into a pick, then goes through a heating process to create bright, iridescent colors. It's always a surprise to see how they turn out.

The Classic Picks feature just the colorful metal effects, but they can also be embellished with crystals, metal studs, or custom printed designs.

I'm so far behind, I think I'm first!

Holy fuck balls, so much has happened since I last posted! Shame on me. But I have good excuses, lots of fabulous excuses.

1. Hollywood DC was a blast! From reception to viewing party and beyond, it was one of my favorite WOW shows, and I'm still stoked to have been a part of it. Big heaping thanks to James. :)

2. But wait, there's more! If you're in the LA area, you must come to the opening of December's show. Because not only will it be entirely $99 art, and who doesn't love a bargain, but I'm gonna have these adorable little bleach pieces in the show.

Each is 5x7" on cotton jersey, stretched over a wood frame. A few are embellished with shiny bits, 'cause what's Columbia without her sequins? I'll also be submitting a piece to January's show, but you'll have to wait for news on that.

The show opens Dec 4th at world of wonder, 6650 Hollywood Blvd, 8pm

3. Here's the random little piece that inspired those ^^. Also 5x7"

4. One of my classes is an intro to craft techniques. The basics of needlepoint, knitting, and so on. But the second half is metal work...much more my thing. Here's my first project! I beat the shit out of some copper, cut it into guitar picks, and lit it on fire. Brutal!

Now they've all got holes and jump rings and chains. Not bad for a first try, and I love torched copper.

I also torched a bigger square piece to do a painting on. I'm thinking Michael Monroe, but not entirely sure yet.

5. SO. MUCH. ART. I've cranked so much out in the last couple months it's kinda insane. For me. Who usually only manages a few pieces. Here's a check list of what's in the works or finished. Keep an eye out here, or myspace, or my website for the finished pictures.
-- James St. James, 'cause I'm pretty sure painting him is some kind of addiction.
-- Triplets Triptych, this is almost done! Getting there. I know as soon as I finish it I'm gonna wanna start a new one of these beauties.
-- Rocky Horror series, done!
-- Phil Lewis painting, almost done! I told Phil about this months ago, I'm sure he's forgotten or assumed I forgot. Never!
-- Clockwork Orange piece, done!
-- Glam killers, ...undecided. I've done a couple. Might do more.
-- James and Michael, two random little bleachy things, done!
-- Roxy Vayn painting, another random lovely. 25% done.

And then like three things I'm planning to start, and some side project commissions for people. Don't worry if you don't see it listed, it's on my schedule too!

Phew. So much to do, so little time. But so far the stuff I've been making is really really cool, and my senior show is gonna be awesome.

And now, I sleep.

Groove a little, baby...

I'm making one of a kind t-shirts in my printmaking independent study. Screenprinting is handy for making lots of the same design, but I've been combining it with bleach to make unique individual shirts. Yay.

Here's a couple of the first ones I made for myself.

Made for the WOW opening. I scanned in my piece and burned a screen with the image, then bleached the background and printed on top. Lovin' the silver text.

Bleached background and about 4 layers of screenprinting.

Coming soon to my shop! Email or message me if you'd like a custom one. They're also handy if you're in a band or whatever and would like to sell/auction off a one of a kind autographed piece of merch.

Marc Bolan worries about you...

He does.

But you seem ok.

A couple random bleachy things. I've got some new big ones planned. Wee.

*Squeal!*

Omgz! Guess who gets to be in the next world of wonder show? Yaaay. If you're in LA, come check it out on the 23rd, from 8-midnight. On Hollywood Blvd.

I'll be making random little happy noises for the rest of the month.
